Beijing Floods Claim Lives at Nursing Home: A “Painful Lesson” in Emergency Preparedness

Beijing, China – The devastating floods that have swept across China this summer have resulted in a tragic incident in Beijing, where 31 residents of a nursing home lost their lives. The facility, located in the Miyun District on the city’s outskirts, was inundated with chest-high floodwaters, trapping dozens of elderly and immobile residents.

Local officials have acknowledged “loopholes in emergency planning,” describing the event as a “painful lesson” and a “wake-up call.” The nursing home, situated in a central area previously deemed safe, was not included in evacuation plans, an oversight that proved deadly. According to Chinese media, approximately 77 residents were inside the facility when water levels rapidly rose to almost 2 meters (6 ft), leaving about 40 people trapped.

This disaster is part of a broader pattern of extreme weather hitting China this summer. The Beijing floods have claimed a total of 44 lives, with other regions also suffering significant casualties. In nearby Hebei province, 16 people died, and a city in Shandong province saw two deaths and ten missing after Typhoon Wipha.

Experts have linked the country’s increasingly extreme weather to climate change. The financial cost of natural disasters in China for the first half of the year has already reached over 54 billion yuan ($7.5 billion), with flooding accounting for the majority of these losses.
