Countering the Propaganda Undermining Peace and Stability in AJK

In recent developments, a wave of disinformation has emerged on social media platforms, orchestrated through a network of accounts linked to the so-called AJK-based Awami Action Committee (AAC). At least ten social media accounts have been identified as propagating false, venomous, and highly provocative content designed to incite unrest and manipulate public sentiment, particularly among the youth. These accounts serve a clear purpose: to spread anti-Pakistan and anti-Army rhetoric that fosters agitation, deepens divisions, and erodes trust in national institutions.
This campaign appears to be neither organic nor isolated. It is part of a larger, coordinated propaganda operation, notably gaining traction following the arrest of Ghulam Mujtaba, a senior figure associated with AAC. The Indian media immediately seized upon the incident, amplifying disinformation and portraying Pakistan in a negative light. This response strongly suggests India’s backing and involvement in fueling this narrative, using it as a strategic tool to provoke instability in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). By presenting a distorted image of human rights violations and accusing Pakistan of suppressing the people of AJK, this disinformation campaign seeks to delegitimize the state and justify forceful protests as the only viable form of resistance.
A central theme in this narrative is the attempt to create a false perception that the Pakistan Army is an occupying force in AJK and that it is exploiting the region’s resources for its own gain. These malicious claims go as far as to demonize the military and administrative structures in AJK, painting them as tools of oppression rather than institutions working towards development and stability. This portrayal is far from reality. The Pakistan Army and state institutions have consistently worked for the progress of AJK, maintaining peace, supporting disaster relief, developing infrastructure, and ensuring the protection of national sovereignty against both internal and external threats.
Moreover, the disinformation attempts to undermine the current Government of AJK by branding it a puppet regime allegedly installed to serve the interests of Pakistan rather than the people of the region. Such accusations aim to delegitimize governance and disrupt the connection between the public and their elected representatives. In doing so, these accounts try to seed mistrust among the population and incite hostility against the very mechanisms responsible for development and order in the region.
The real agenda behind this campaign is not the empowerment of AJK’s people, but rather the diversion of attention from India’s well-documented human rights abuses in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). By shifting focus onto Pakistan and creating a false equivalence, India seeks to avoid international scrutiny for its ongoing repression, militarization, and policies of demographic change in IIOJK. The propaganda is meticulously framed to deflect criticism and cast Pakistan as the aggressor, despite Pakistan’s longstanding support for a peaceful resolution based on United Nations resolutions.
The role of the AAC in this campaign is particularly alarming. Once viewed as a platform for raising genuine grievances, it has now been hijacked by hostile intelligence agencies and external actors. Its leaders have adopted increasingly radical positions, including using derogatory language against the martyrs of the Pakistan Army, raising widespread public outrage and suspicion. These actions have caused many in AJK to question the real motives of AAC, with growing demands for accountability and public clarification. The people of AJK have expressed strong disapproval of the unprovoked behavior of AAC leaders and believe the committee no longer represents their aspirations but rather acts at the behest of foreign masters.
There is a pressing need for a strategic response to this disinformation campaign. One of the most critical steps is the establishment of a grassroots communication system to reconnect with the public and educate them about the constructive role of the current political leadership in AJK. The people must be made aware of the progress achieved under the present government, including development initiatives, improved public services, and security measures. Restoring faith in democratic processes and peaceful dialogue is essential for long-term stability.
Additionally, continuous monitoring of the social media activities of such accounts is necessary to stay ahead of emerging threats and counter propaganda with factual, timely, and positive narratives. A well-coordinated media campaign through the Pakistan State Media (PSM) can play a pivotal role in exposing the lies and agendas of AAC and its foreign patrons. This campaign should highlight the stark contrast between Pakistan’s peaceful and inclusive approach and India’s oppressive tactics in IIOJK.
Pakistan remains committed to peace, progress, and the empowerment of all its regions, including AJK. The efforts of a few extremists and externally influenced individuals must not be allowed to define the broader national narrative. Peaceful engagement, trust in institutions, and unity remain the key to preserving the sovereignty and future of AJK. Through awareness, vigilance, and proactive communication, the people of AJK can be empowered to resist disinformation and stand together for a stable and prosperous future.
