Aimal Wali Khan’s Claims Versus the Facts of National Security
Disagreement in politics is natural, but when dissent comes at the cost of denying facts and undermining national interests, it ceases to be mere disagreement and becomes outright irresponsibility. Aimal Wali Khan’s recent statements fall precisely into this category: calling the May 2025 Pakistan India conflict an “artificial war,” questioning the Field Marshal’s rank, and attempting to paint America’s role in the ceasefire with a conspiratorial brush.
Was the May 2025 War “Artificial”?
Let us first examine this fundamental claim. In May 2025, India launched missile strikes under the name Operation Sindoor targeting nine locations in Pakistan, triggering a four day military confrontation that involved aerial skirmishes, artillery exchanges, missile attacks, and drone strikes. Both Pakistan and India exchanged missile, drone, and artillery strikes, pushing two nuclear armed neighbours to the brink of war before an uneasy ceasefire was brokered through US mediation.
This is not a Pakistani government statement: it is verified reporting from Arab News, Scroll, AFP, and other independent international outlets. Pakistan named the conflict “Marka e Haq”, the Battle of Truth, during which both sides exchanged artillery, missile, and drone strikes before a US brokered ceasefire was reached. A war that unfolded before the entire world, in which Pakistani civilians were martyred and families were shattered, Aimal Wali Khan calls this “artificial”?
This is not merely a political statement; it is an insult to the blood of the martyrs.
The Field Marshal’s Rank: Facts vs. Political Point Scoring
Aimal Wali Khan also took aim at the Field Marshal’s rank, despite the decision resting on a clear constitutional and legal foundation. The federal government promoted General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal in recognition of his superior strategy and courageous leadership during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, under which Pakistan’s armed forces inflicted a decisive defeat upon the enemy.
The decision was made on May 20, 2025, at a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, citing his role and services during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos. The cabinet also decided that officers, soldiers, martyrs, and civilians who rendered distinguished services during the operation would be honoured with national awards. Field Marshal Asim Munir is only the second officer in Pakistan’s history to hold this rank: the first being Ayub Khan, who assumed the title following the 1965 war with India. The rank is legally valid and historically precedented. Reducing it to a political controversy is nothing short of dishonesty.
Trump “Fixed” the War? Where Is the Evidence?
Aimal Wali Khan’s claim that Trump first arranged the war and then brokered peace is baseless and deeply irresponsible. America’s role was limited to facilitating the ceasefire, as widely reported by international media. The allegation that the war was pre arranged is nothing but fiction. UN Secretary General António Guterres called on both Pakistan and India to exercise “maximum restraint” and step back from the brink of war. When a politician makes such sweeping claims without a shred of evidence, it is not political wisdom: it is cheap attention seeking.
TTP and Afghanistan: Facts, Straight from the United Nations
Aimal Wali Khan has also sought to cast doubt on Pakistan’s position regarding Afghanistan. But Pakistan’s stance no longer needs anyone to vouch for it. The 35th report of the UN Security Council’s Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team confirmed that the Afghan Taliban provide logistical, operational, and financial support to the TTP, including a monthly payment of 3 million Afghanis, approximately $43,000.
The report documented that from July to December 2024, the TTP carried out over 600 attacks on Pakistan using Afghan territory, and highlighted growing collaboration between the TTP, the Afghan Taliban, and Al Qaeda. The more recent 16th report further estimated that around 6,000 TTP fighters are based in Afghan provinces: Khost, Kunar, Nangarhar, Paktika, and Paktia, with TTP chief Noor Wali Mehsud reportedly residing in Kabul itself.
This is not Pakistan’s own narrative: it is the finding of an independent UN team submitted to the Security Council. If Aimal Wali Khan truly represents the people, he should read these reports rather than reflexively objecting to everything.
A Final Word
For the soldier standing at the border through the night, no war is “artificial.” Every bullet is real. Every dark night is real. Every martyrdom is real. Carrying forward a father’s political legacy does not mean trading in the emotions of the people or weaponising national security for political gain. Aimal Wali Khan, by all means engage in politics, hold your ground, disagree, but not on the back of the martyrs’ blood and not at the cost of the nation’s defence.
