Modi Strengthens Control in Jammu
Deploys 3 CRPF Battalions in Jammu to Tighten Military Grip on IIOJK
India’s Modi government has ramped up the deployment of para-military forces to further tighten its grip on occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Recently, three battalions of CRPF have been deployed in Udhampur and Kathua districts of Jammu. The move is ostensibly to strengthen the security grid against terrorism. But the fact is that the Delhi government is pursuing a policy of making the region a permanent military cantonment through it.
Transfer to the control of the internal security center in Jammu
With the deployment of CRPF, the internal affairs of Jammu have gone directly under the control of the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs. This change is being presented with the impression that the army should be focused on the border fronts, but in fact it is an attempt to increase direct control of Delhi. The objective is to keep the region completely under the Home Ministry and suppress all forms of resistance at the local level.
Institutionalizing repression in Jammu
These battalions have replaced the Rashtriya Rifles, a subsidiary of the Indian Army. Apparently, this change gives the impression of a military withdrawal, but the reality is the opposite. The army has been freed for aggression on the borders. Paramilitary forces are in direct control of civilians. In this way, the military occupation is not reduced, but it gets institutionalized.
Desperate measures of India after the failure of “Operation Sindoor”
In May 2025, India launched “Operation Sindoor” against Pakistan, but the attempt failed miserably. The Pakistani defense inflicted embarrassing losses on the Indian Air Force. After this attack, India has further increased the repression in the occupied valley. The new deployment of CRPF is a result of the same cynicism and vindictive thinking.
The move makes it clear that the Modi government considers Kashmir a military colony, not just a political dispute.
Schools, markets and settlements have also been put under military surveillance. Citizens’ daily routines have been choked by military restrictions. The result is that the local population has become prisoners in their own homes.
Human rights violations have become commonplace in Jammu
CRPF has a long history of human rights violations. Laws such as the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and the Public Safety Act (PSA) give them absolute powers. As a result, civilians are subjected to crimes such as extrajudicial killings, custodial torture and sexual assault. These laws give immunity to the Indian forces and the doors of justice are closed for the people.

This policy of the Modi government is not only to suppress militancy but also to distort the political rights of the Kashmiri people. Every protest is linked to terrorism and every youth is harassed as a suspect. The aim is to shut down every avenue of Kashmiri resistance.
Since 2019, India has stepped up efforts to change the demographic structure of occupied Kashmir. Land is being given to non-state residents and properties of locals are being confiscated. The deployment of more battalions is to implement the same plans, put pressure on the local population. The policy aims to erase the Kashmiri identity and transform the region into a new demographic.
The new government and new laws in India
India has recently introduced the “Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Amendment Bill, 2025.” Under this bill, the chief minister or ministers can be sacked immediately in case of arrest. This law is an attempt to completely erode state sovereignty. The Delhi government is further strengthening the direct occupation of the Centre by disempowering the elected representatives.
Silence of the World Community towards Kashmir issue
Despite all these measures, the international community remains silent. The resolutions of the United Nations are still buried in papers. The US and European countries are limited to statements. India is misleading the world by making its so-called democratic identity a shield. The result is that the people of Kashmir are forced to suffer alone.
Role of Pakistan towards Kashmir crisis
Pakistan has always raised the voice of the Kashmiri people. Islamabad has raised the issue at every international forum and made it clear that the resolution of the Kashmir issue is possible only in accordance with the UN resolutions. Pakistan’s policy is to let the people of Kashmir decide their own future.
Will of the people of Kashmir
Despite all the efforts of India, the people of Kashmir did not back down from their struggle. They have been making sacrifices from generation to generation but remain steadfast in their demand for their right to self-determination. Persecution, repression and military siege have also failed to break their resolve. The people of Kashmir have made it clear that they will never accept permanent slavery.
Need for a permanent solution
The danger to regional peace in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) and Jammu is not possible only due to demographic shifts or military intervention. It requires some solid steps like the right to self-determination of Kashmiris by putting the UN resolutions into action.
The deployment of Three CRPF battalions by the Indian administration shows its oppressive control over the Jammu region. The action was taken under the cover of counterterrorism. In actual, the para-military deployment was to make the region an Indian military cantonment. It wanted to control Jammu’s internal security for its personnel purposes. Such kind of Indian actions are resulting in rise of HR violations. The citizens of IOK are still battling for their right to self-determination against oppression of the Indian government.
