UK to Test National Emergency Alert System on 7 September

The UK Government will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alerts system at 3pm on Sunday, 7 September 2025.
During the test, all compatible 4G and 5G mobile phones and tablets will:
- Vibrate and emit a loud siren-like sound for around 10 seconds, even if the device is on silent.
- Display a message on screen confirming that this is a test alert.
- Require no action from the user.
What is the National Emergency Alert System?
The Emergency Alerts system is designed to notify the public about life-threatening situations, including severe flooding, wildfires, and extreme weather. The test ensures the system works properly and helps citizens understand how alerts look and sound. The last national test took place in April 2023, when the system first launched. More details about alert systems are available on Wikipedia.
Why is the Test Important?
Routine testing confirms that the Emergency Alerts system can function correctly during an actual crisis. In a real emergency, only the UK Government and emergency services are authorized to send alerts. To learn more, visit gov.uk/alerts.
Domestic Abuse Safety Guidance
Authorities recognize that some domestic abuse victims may fear the test alert could reveal hidden phones. Guidance on how to opt out of receiving alerts is available at gov.uk/alerts/opting-out.
Local support is also available:
- Housing Safeguarding Team (Thurrock Council): 01375 652 277
- Emergency: Dial 999
- Non-urgent cases: Dial 101 and ask for the Essex Police Domestic Abuse Investigations team
Staying Prepared
