JD Vance Defends His Wish for Wife’s Conversion to Christianity Amid Backlash

Washington, November 1, 2025, US Vice President JD Vance has publicly defended his remarks expressing a personal wish for his wife, Usha Vance, who was raised Hindu, to convert to Christianity, calling the backlash “a form of anti-Christian bigotry.”

Speaking at a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday, held in honor of slain right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, Vance responded to a question about interfaith marriage and the religious upbringing of his three children.

“Do I hope eventually that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved in by church? Yeah, I honestly do wish that,” Vance said. “But if she doesn’t, then God says everybody has free will, and so that doesn’t cause a problem for me.”

Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, faced criticism on social media following his comments. Responding on X (formerly Twitter), he condemned what he called “disgusting” attacks and emphasized that his wife’s faith was a personal matter.

“She is not a Christian and has no plans to convert,” Vance wrote. “But like many people in an interfaith marriage, I hope she may one day see things as I do.”

Usha Vance, born in San Diego to Indian immigrant parents, has spoken previously about her family’s Hindu background, saying in a 2024 Fox News interview that her parents’ religion made them “really good people.”

The couple met while studying at Yale Law School and married in 2014. Since his conversion, Vance has often linked his faith to his conservative worldview, framing religion as central to America’s cultural revival.

Vance’s remarks have reignited conversations about religion, marriage, and identity in American politics, particularly as he is viewed as a strong contender for the 2028 presidential race under President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
